- Pledge by phone at 901-528-1990 or online.
In honor of WEVL's Spring Pledge Drive, I will be playing some of my favorite songs from 2006 (all 3 and 1/2 months of it!). Our goal is to reach $62,000 by 6pm this Saturday, and every pledge counts! So if you enjoy listening to the Lovers, please make a pledge to show your support.
Thank You
Hayden
(BTW, the great-looking WEVL shirt at the top of the post can be yours for a pledge of $60 or more.)

After that, Monsieur Jeffrey Evans is back as special guest host - this time on the Rock House (normally hosted by Lonnie). He'll be playing some fantastic rockabilly music from his personal collection tonight from 7-9 pm CST, so don't miss it!
High Fidelity isn't just a program here on WEVL (which does air tonight from Midnight - 2am), it's also the title of Nick Hornby's novel about the world of music snobbery (as well as Hornby's common man's hero Rob Fleming searching to grow up and find a meaningful relationship). If you have ever spent hours scrutinizing the order of a mix tape for a special someone, then you understand the character of Rob Fleming. Author Hornby will be making an apperance at the Michael D. Rose Theatre tonight at 7pm on the U of M campus. The event is free and open to the public.
For more information, click here.
(Of course, High Fidelity is also the electronic reproduction of sound as well as a song by Elvis Costello.)
Hosted by Brian and Judy.
(And yes, I will be bringing a portable T.V. to watch the Tigers during those long ones.)

Boy, I can't wait for summer to begin!
One of the greatest rewards listening to a station like WEVL is the exposure to so many different musical styles and genres. Artists that I never even thought I would be exposed to or even care about are now amazing me each day with their timelessness. As for today's purchase, I have always loved religious music (Singing Down In Dixie is one of my favorite programs at the station, and, let's face it, the best part of church has always been the music, right?) and this is a great introduction to the soulful side of the Word. My favorite has to be "The Last Mile of the Way" from the Soul Stirrers (from Sam Cooke's early career) or Dorothy Love Coates' "Strange Man".
(And I must say, it was very enjoyable getting to finally meet Mark of Headjams whose live Grateful Dead program runs from Midnight - 2am.)
Join us this Saturday night at the Hi-Tone as WEVL celebrates its 30th Anniversary with Impala, Harlan T. Bobo, Vending Machine, and Brad Postlethwaite and Friends. Also, DJ Buck Wilders will be on hand spinning records from his own amazing collection. The MC for the evening will be the always entertaing Monsieur Jeffrey Evans.
Showtime will start at 10pm sharp so don't be late!
Robby Grant (Vending Machine) will be stopping by the studio today to chat it up and perform a few tunes in support of the upcoming 30th Anniversary Spring Concert for WEVL on Saturday.
Tune in: Today 1-2pm
Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon) will be making a rare appearance in Memphis tonight at the Hi-Tone. I first heard of Mark Kozelek when my friend Aaron gave me the Red House Painter's Down Colorful Hill album. Rarley have I been so drawn to someone's music so quickly. Kozelek's sound is often depressing in nature but always beautiful and achingly honest. If anyone deserves to be called the modern Nick Drake, it certainly would be Mr. Kozelek. Don't miss this chance!
- And don't forget about tomorrow's show at the Hi-Tone when we are privileged enough to have The Undertow Orchestra come to town. Never heard of The Undertow Orchestra? Well, believe me you've heard of the members who make it up. Here is a description of the event:
This is a very special collaborative tour with David Bazan (Pedro The Lion, Headphones), Vic Chesnutt, Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) all sharing the stage, rotating between each songwriter's material, while serving as backing band on various instruments for each other's tunes. Scott Danbom (Centro-matic) will join the Orchestra on piano and violin.
Brad Postlethwaite and the Brad Band will be opening up.
Starting this week on the Lovers, I will be having some artists from the local label Makeshift stop by to perform a few tunes and talk about the just released double-disc Makeshift 4 compilation. There will be various shows this weekend to support the new record:
Thursday, Feb. 23 @ the Hi-Tone
Issen
Esque
The Six-String Jets
Friday, Feb. 24 @ The Hi-Tone
"The Makeshift Mambo"
Jung Shin
Jeffrey James & The Haul
Brad Postlethwaite & The Brad Band
Special Guests: Imagination Head, Holly Cole, J.D. Reager
Saturday, Feb. 25 @ Young Avenue Deli
The Glass
Augustine
Blair Combest
Plus, new releases from:
Belle and Sebastian, The Eels, Lambchop, Maximo Park, Anna Oxygen, Colin Meloy, Chicago Underground Duo, Centro-Matic, M. Ward, and many others...
For the first time, Memphis Beat will have a special guest programmer this week when Monsieur Jeffrey Evans stops by to provide the hosting duties while I'm away on business. You don't want to miss this one! Tuesday 1-2pm
