- I'm pretty swamped this weekend so I won't probably be able to get around to reviewing this until the start of next week. However, you can visit the band's website for a couple of free mp3's from the new album.

Some Suggestions For Our New Listeners - Part 1

Last week on the Lovers, I acknowledged several WEVL programs that I thought our new webcasting listeners might enjoy checking out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to mention as many shows as I had hoped before the show ran out of time. So I wrote up a list of 10 programs that I have been listening to lately on WEVL. In no order, here are 5 out of those 10:

1) UK-JA Reggae (Thursday 1-2pm) - I never thought I could get into a reggae show, but Bowman has opened my eyes. Don't expect to hear Bob Marley here, but a healthy dose of ska, dub, and underground reggae. Sometimes he even plays The Clash or Gorillaz. My only complaint is that it's only an hour long.

2) Hi Fidelity (Wednesday Midnight-2am) - Indie pop galore! Doug's show is what I listen to when I prepare for the Lovers. Along with the latest releases, there is a pretty good chance you'll hear some of Doug's favorites including Guided By Voices, Superchunk, Built To Spill, Mathew Sweet, and, of course, Elvis Costello. Also, expect to hear some Memphis locals thrown into the mix. Typically, I relisten when it's repeated on Mondays from 2-4pm.

3) Flow Radio (Monday 6-8pm) - Ok, so I haven't heard of nearly any of the artists that Mary Jane profiles each week. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy her truly eclectic taste. She'll even honor a request for This Mortal Coil.

4) Varied Music (Tuesday 4-6pm) - Judy (Station Manager) and Brian (Program Director) are usually responsible for the music during these hours and the result is equivalent to that of a really great mix tape.

5) Back to the Country (Tuesday 8-11am) - I'll be honest, I don't own a lot of country music. But I do know good country music when I hear it. And Ken plays the heck out of it! For three hours, Ken goes through the various styles of "honky tonk, bluegrass, cowboy, and western swing". Each week also includes an album feature.

Blues on the Bluff Part 2 - Tonight!

Ah, shucks! I really do hate that I am going to have to miss Blues on the Bluff Part 2 tonight. Especially since Part Uno was so much fun! (Not to mention that it gave me days of blog material) So what's my excuse? I'll be at a dinner party for a friend of mine who is leaving the country for a year. Which I believe is a good enough reason. Still, it's a shame that they fall on the same date. Now of course, if you plan on missing this summer's best party, you best have a really good excuse yourself!

Unwed Sailor Comes To Memphis

The primarily instrumental group, Unwed Sailor, will be stopping by the Hi Tone tonight for the first stop on their "fall" tour. If you would like to get a feel for their music, the media section on their site has a fair share of mp3's from the back catalog as well as a few from their last release, The Marionette and the Music Box. There is even a clever section on the site that takes each track from the Marionette and sets it to the paintings of Jamie Hunt, which help illustrate the album's conceptual fantasy storyline. A new album titled The White Ox is expected to be released the beginning of next year. And of course, they are on Myspace. Check that out here.

The Lovers' Album of the Week

Holopaw Quit +/or Fight

While listening to Holopaw's new release Quit +/or Fight, I am reminded of the excitement I first felt after listening to the Fruit Bats' 2003 release, Mouthfuls. Perhaps Mouthfuls wasn't a revolutionary record (heck, who wants that responsibility?) but its strong hooks, beautiful harmonies, and overall good nature was a breath of fresh air, and as a result, the Fruit Bats were my driving buddies on more than one occasion. And while the Fruit Bats have a new one out, Spelled In Bones, that record hasn't evoked the same feelings that Quit +/or Fight is doing right now. I am almost embarrassed to mention that I wasn't even aware of Holopaw until their new release found its way into my WEVL mailbox, especially since they are on Sub Pop and have even released a previous album (in 2003, no less). Oh well, better late than never I suppose. So what's so great about Holopaw? Because truth be told, the Holopaw sound is one that has been emulated to death: the folk singer/songwriter who wants to rock out as well as dabble with his country heart. What makes Quit +/or Fight (and Mouthfuls for that matter) work is the sheer fidelity behind it. At no point do I believe I'm being force fed to feel a certain way. When it works, there is no reason for trickery. A large reason for this is John Orth's crushingly fragile voice that trembles long after the verse is over (a vocal style similar to that of Brad Bailey of the The Glass), especially on "Shiver Me," a song that is begging to be named the most beautiful song of the year. Of course, the fact that the rest of the band is able to create such tender, playful melodies doesn't hurt matters. I can imagine that there are numerous bands out there attempting an album like Quit +/or Fight, but unlike the vast majority of them, they will fail because Holopaw's record doesn't succeed because of talent, but because of honesty.

Oneida Play The Hi Tone!

Last night, the Brooklyn trio Oneida rolled into town to perform their unique blend of explosive rock, trippy jazz, and dancehall breakdowns. At the unset of the show, keyboardist Bobby Matador (aka Fat Bobby) called for the small but eager crowd to move closer to the stage to rock with the O Team. From there, Fat Bobby conjured up the spirit of Ray Manzarek (oh wait, he's still alive!) and hammered his keys to the point that he had to make a "surgical" repair a few tunes down the playlist. Along with vocalist and bass/lead guitarist Papa Crazy and manic drummer Kid Millions, those Brooklyn boys left us good ol' Southerns satisfied with a show that like their records was never predictable. Or as Tommy Pappass from The Glass so elegantly shouted, "That was so fantastically amazing!"

(Earlier that night, I had fallen asleep at 9pm and didn't wake up until around 12:30am. So, unfortunately, I missed seeing one of Memphis' best local groups, The Color Cast. Which is a shame because I always look forward to seeing them. Sorry guys!)

Oneida Are Coming To Memphis

Brooklyn's own Oneida will be making a stop in Memphis this Thursday night at the Hi Tone. Their newest release, The Wedding, is a mesh of pop/rock/electronic (much like the Lovers) that most resembles a young child that can't sit still. And that's a good thing! Okkervil River Plays Memphis

Okkervil River at the Hi Tone.

Along with spirited performances from Tim Regan and Dixie Dirt, the Austin based Okkervil River played their first show in Memphis last Thursday night. Throughout the night, the fellas contiuned to express what an honor it was playing a show in our fair city with its rich musical history. They even covered Big Star's "O, Dana". Memphis Beat - Substitution Jason Cimon!

Well, the Memphis Beat's Summer School Session was to conclude this week with a History of Loverly Recordings. However, the show had to be postponed to next week (8/2) so that owner and founder of Loverly Music, Ed Porter, would be able to join us.

But don't fret because we have an excellent substitution in Jason Cimon.

Jason is an amazing musician from North Mississipi whose strong yet fragile voice reminds me of a Southern Jeff Buckley. Check out his Myspace page to learn more about the fella and listen to his music.

Intonation Music Festival

So I am in Chicago attending the Intonation Music Festival. I'm really looking forward to seeing: The Go! Team, Prefuse 73, Four Tet, Tortoise, Deerhoof, Thunderbirds Are Now!, Dungen, and the Will Oldham DJ Set. And I'm not complaining at all about getting the chance to see The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, and Out Hud for the second time this year. For a complete list of the artist lineup, click here.

The Memphis Beat Summer School - Week 3

The Memphis Beat keeps chuggin' along with its series of summer theme shows with an in-studio performance from Brad Postlethwaite and special guests this Tuesday (7/7) from 1 - 2pm. You're sure to know Brad from his work with Snowglobe or his own solo albums. And perhaps you are aware of him being the driving force behind the record label, Makeshift Music. As well as performing, Brad will be sharing with us some of his favorite Memphis music.
